Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

Here in kppm we feel that there are always opportunities to improve yourself and we believe firmly in helping our candidates to make the best decisions for their career. With this in mind we have done a great deal of research into the options that are available and we also looked at many of the employers who offer study options to their staff.

Refresher courses – While this one may seem obvious it is clear that not many people seem to think about it as a method of self-improvement. We have all been to training courses, through college or been educated through hands on experience but a simple course to brush up on your skills always looks appealing on a CV. It shows that you want to do your best and ensure that you have the most up to date knowledge in the industry.

Professional Recognition – This is one of the main sources of progression within any professional’s career and is something that people always strive to achieve. It is important to look at the options that are available to you in the first instance before embarking on your study towards achieving membership of the respective organisation. From MIEI to CIBSE or ACCA to CIMA there are numerous options available across a wide number of industries and you must decide what suits you best. We can provide you with the information you need on joining these organisations but you must decide for yourself which of them suits you best

Further Education – Do you currently have a degree? Then why not study for a Master’s and really specialise in the area you operate in? Do you come from a Trade’s background? Then maybe you could consider tackling a degree part-time while you work? Upskilling is another great way to develop your career and open the door to a lot of new opportunities at the same time. And with technology and flexible options there are an abundance of opportunities available to anyone and everyone. You can study to attain a degree through distance learning or study part-time evenings and weekends to fit in with your work schedule. The opportunities are endless and in the Land of Saints and Scholars you know you are getting a top class education at the same time.

Upskilling – Just like further education this can be the key to getting a promotion or for you getting a job ahead of anyone else. No matter what industry you work in there are always ways to improve yourself in a short space of time through lower cost alternatives to entering into education again. Is there a new technology in your industry? Is there a software package that the company uses that you want to use? Is there something you feel missing from your CV that could get you onto those prestigious projects? Again, there are plenty of options available should you wish to progress so see what everyone else has and what is coming down the line.

Project Experience – This can be the easiest way to get noticed and stand out from the crowd. You just have to get in with the right manager in your company and show them what you can do. If you have the desired project experience then your CV will look irresistible to most companies in your industry, but you should always make sure that you enjoy the work. There is no point working on something if you do not enjoy it. It might make you look irresistible but you will undoubtedly be trying to get away from those sort of projects.

While this is certainly not an extensive list of ways to improve your chances when seeking a promotion or a new role, it is definitely a great place to start. Just one of these could be the key to getting where you want, but a combination of these could take you well beyond that. It is up to you as to how you want your career to progress and it is key to take it into your own hands and ask for help when you need it.

If you are interested in finding out more about the study options that are available and the companies that might suit you and your career objectives please let us know and we would be more than happy to help you out in any way we can.
